A distanced crowd of diverse adults, children and pets are sitting in a park, some under canopies, interspersed with DIY air purifier equipment. They are all watching a magic act being presented by Travis Bernhardt, who wears a dark suit and a Flomask.

Back by popular demand, the second annual Clean Air Festival is a COVID-safer, immuno-inclusive hybrid event that brings together community members to celebrate clean air.

Kick off the festivities on Sunday, September 8 with a fun, casual online social to meet your fellow COVID-safe cuties. Then join us on Sunday, September 15 for a day of family fun, including a DIY air purifier building workshop*, games and activity tables, a prize draw, stage magic and live music! Take a mask/leave a mask at our mask swap table, and nab free respirators, rapid tests, zines and DIY fit test kits while supplies last.

Respirator-style masks (like N95s or KN95s) are required and available on site. Full safety and access info here.

Festival Safety & Accessibility

Required safety protocols

Click each item to learn more.

  • Adults and children over age 2* must wear a well-fitting respirator-style mask (like an N95 or KN95, not a surgical mask) throughout the event. These masks should not have valves, except for SIP valves
  • Additional adult, child, and clear respirators will be available onsite.
  • If removing your mask to eat or drink, please maintain as much distance from others as possible (e.g. by moving to the perimeter of the event, or leaving at least 12 feet of space). There will be ample space throughout the park for distancing.
  • Some performers are unable to mask while they perform. All performers will undergo molecular testing (similar to PCR) on the day of the event, and will be distanced from the audience.
  • Bring (new, unused) masks for our “take a mask, leave a mask” table, or take some home to try! We ask that you refrain from trying on different masks at the event itself.

*If you are medically unable to wear a respirator, or if you are attending with a child under 2, please check in with the welcome table so we can figure out how best to support you while keeping everyone as safe as possible.

Masking expectations: Check out this respirator quick-start guide from @sinistral.scribe (feel free to print and share!)

  • Please take a COVID test on the day of the event and only attend if negative. Free rapid tests are available at some pharmacies – find a map of participating pharmacies here. They are also available from mutual aid groups like Masks 4 East Van. (Note: expiry dates for Artron & BTNX rapid tests have been extended 6 months from the dates on the boxes.)
  • All performers will take molecular tests, and will only attend if they test negative prior to the event.
  • Additional free rapid tests will be available at the Clean Air Festival. We encourage you to test in the days following the event.
  • If you test positive after the Clean Air Festival, we ask that you let us know at CleanAirFestival@gmail.com so we can inform other attendees (which will be done without sharing your name).

Rapid test techniques: Check out this great video and FAQ from Protect Our Province BC on how to properly do a rapid test!

  • Please refrain from attending in-person if you or anyone in your household has had recent symptoms of infectious illness, or has had recent exposure to someone who is COVID-positive (even if you test negative).
  • If you are unable to attend in-person, we welcome your participation via livestream or recording!
  • If you develop COVID-like symptoms following the festival (even without a positive test) or discover that a COVID exposure has occurred, we ask that you let us know at CleanAirFestival@gmail.com so we can inform other attendees (which will be done without sharing your name).

For anyone facing a potential COVID infection, we suggest the following resources:
People’s CDC: ‘What to do if you have COVID’
Clean Air Club: COVID+ plan
@sinistral.scribe: ‘I might have COVID, now what?’

  • Please refrain from wearing fragrances, or from smoking or vaping in the event area, for the safety of other attendees.
  • For those looking for extra protection, we recommend using anti-viral nasal sprays and/or CPC mouthwash before and after attending.
  • To support risk assessment in the days prior to the event, you can check the Canadian COVID-19 Hazard Index from COVID-19 Resources Canada to help determine risk levels of SARS-CoV-2.

Please follow our required safety protocols to help ensure the annual Clean Air Festival is as safe, inclusive and accessible as possible. We believe that safety is not only a collective responsibility, but something that can be joyful, and a way to create communities of care.

Our goal is to prioritize informed consent and the precautionary principle, and to centre the most impacted ‒ including those disproportionately impacted by the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

We recognize that access is a continuum, and there is always more we can do. We regard these measures as an imperfect work in progress, and welcome feedback.

Thank you for joining us to co-create a more accessible event, and for doing your part to keep our community safer!

Access Notes

  • DIY air purifiers built during the Festival workshop will be donated to schools via Safe Air in BC Schools, and to vulnerable community members via Masks4EastVan.
  • The Clean Air Festival will take place outdoors, so the air quality should be excellent, barring any wildfire/air pollution events.
  • The site includes a mix of sun and shade from trees, shelters and canopies.
  • The park setting includes a variety of potential pollen sources. Grass is mown low, but there is an assortment of mature trees.
  • We encourage those who are able to dress for the weather, and to bring sun umbrellas. If you need to ensure a shady spot in advance, please contact CleanAirFestival@gmail.com.
  • In the event of extreme weather or dangerous levels of wildfire smoke, the event will be rescheduled.
  • The Clean Air Festival takes place at Slocan Park, 2750 E 29th Avenue, Vancouver near the park shelter.

  • There is a ramp from the SkyTrain, and a paved path to the event.
  • There are 2-hour free parking spots along 29th Ave, in front of the park. Unfortunately, there are no accessible parking spots nearby.
  • There will be a dedicated bicycle lock-up on site, near the welcome table.
  • Find maps of the Festival site layout here (note that they are approximate, and may be subject to minor change).
  • The majority of the event will be on a paved surface with low-mown grass around it. There is a paved path to the event area.
  • Restrooms are wheelchair accessible (though doors need to be pushed open).
  • We encourage people to bring their own chairs or picnic blankets if able. If you have particular seating needs, please contact us at CleanAirFestival@gmail.com
  • There are two indoor, all-gender restrooms. One on the North side of the fieldhouse and one on the South side of the fieldhouse building. (Find them on the map here.)
  • Both restroom doors need to be pushed open. There are wheelchair stalls in each one.
  • Other than the festival, this park is typically quiet and not too busy.
  • Musical performances will be amplified. We encourage those who need them to bring earplugs; we will also have a limited supply of earplugs on site.
  • A self-directed, volunteer-supported sensory break space will be available on the perimeter of the event, courtesy of Live Educate Transform Society (LET’S). (Find it on the map here.)
  • The welcome table will offer optional colour-coded “yes/no” socializing stickers, for those who wish to visually communicate their needs or comfort level around social interaction.

  • Clear respirators will be available near the welcome table.
  • English-language captioning will be provided at our digital September 8th social. We regret that we are unable to offer ASL interpretation for this event.

  • We remind attendees to please refrain from distracting working animals – no petting without permission!

  • There are no close places to buy food; we encourage those who may need snacks or drinks to bring their own.
  • Please distance as much as possible (e.g. by moving to the perimeter or at least 12 feet from others) before unmasking to consume food or beverages.
  • A support team will be available for any safety or security concerns.
  • We will have team members with first-aid training on site. Identify them with red shirts and red crosses on their masks.
  • A Naloxone kit will be available.
